Tasting Notes

The 2021 Madame de Latour makes a striking first impression with its beautiful night sky, amethyst hue. Complex and layered, its nose exhibits cooler climate, Coombsville fruit notes of dark cherry, cassis, violet, and slate, edged with espresso and mocha aromas. The palate is luscious and persistent with opulent flavors of dark plum, blackberry, and tobacco. A powerful structure supports mouthwatering acidity that weaves with plush tannins into a velvety smooth texture and unfurls seamlessly through a lengthy finish. This blend possesses extraordinary aging potential, with the suggestion to cellar it until 2049, a full 25 years.

Winemaking

After hand-harvesting, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery where they were destemmed and cold soaked for 7 days to gently ease color and flavor from the skins. During the roughly 12-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 22 months in French oak barrels to integrate tannins well and impart beautiful toasty barrel notes into the final blend.

Vintage

The 2021 season was joyous and welcome after the challenges of prior vintages. Harvest yielded exceptionally fine fruit, some of the best in recent years. Early winter rains led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the growing season, providing ideal weather for grapes to flower, bloom, and set in early spring. Budbreak occurred early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer saw early and even ripening throughout the valley, with veraison beginning in early July. Due in part to drought conditions, harvest yields were low, and grapes were intensely flavored and smaller in berry size. One of the earliest starts, harvest began with white wine grapes in late July and proceeded with red wine grapes about a month later, at the end of August. From these optimally ripe and flavorful grapes our winemakers crafted lush, fruity wines with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, balance, and structure. 2021 was a tremendous year to taste the nuances and terroir distinctions from around the valley.

Vineyard

For this eponymous wine, we sourced Cabernet Sauvignon from the highly acclaimed Meteor Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA (located in Napa Valley’s southeastern corner). The cool-climate growing region has gravelly loam and well-draining, rocky volcanic soils. Vines planted here produce grapes with complex floral and earthy qualities, focused acidity, and commanding tannins. For juxtaposition, BV Ranch No. 10 Malbec was added to this blend to provide plushness and complexity. With both optimal sun exposure and cooling influences from regular morning fog, this Rutherford ranch enjoys a long, even growing season. Its fruit makes full-bodied, concentrated wines that portray the appellation’s signature Rutherford Dust character.
