The wonderful 2014 vintage gave our Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon its beautiful fresh fruit character and rich, full-bodied structure. Hugely complex and expressive, the wine reveals a broad spectrum of juicy briary black currant, cherry and cassis notes, with nuances of cedar, sandalwood and mocha. Muscular tannins support the plush, expansive palate, while impeccably balanced acidity adds vibrancy. Well-integrated notes of caramel and toasted oak spices - ;from aging in new French oak barrels - ;heighten the aromas and linger on the finish. To enjoy this wine at its full potential, we recommend at least five years of bottle aging; if you can't wait, however, decant before serving.

"Blended of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3 % Merlot, all coming mainly from the Rutherford AVA, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of baked black berries, dried mulberries and preserved plums with hints of allspice, cardamom, lavender and cigar box. Full-bodied, rich and expressive even today, it has a firm, chewy backbone and bags of freshness, promising a long-life and much more to come with careful cellaring." -Lisa Perrotti-Brown, , October 2017
Recognized as James Suckling's Top 100 Napa and Sonoma Wines of 2017 - "Extremely complex aromas of currant, coffee, spearmint, Thai basil and sandalwood. Full body, firm and chewy tannins yet linear and exciting. Just a baby. Fantastic structure here. Better in 2020." - James Suckling, May 2017
"The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve is fabulous. Ripe, silky and wonderfully nuanced, the 2014 is all class. In 2014, the Georges de Latour is remarkably finessed from start to finish. All the elements are wonderfully fused together. The 2014 is a stunningly beautiful Georges de Latour. In 2014, about half of the lots were fermented in barrel. Drops of Petit Verdot and Merlot round out the blend." - Antonio Galloni, 1/2018
At our state-of-the-art winery, dedicated exclusively to the crafting of the Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is fermented in a combination of 55% new French oak barrels which provides early integration of fruit and oak character into the blend and enhances the dense, rich texture. The balance of the must was fermented in stainless steel and upright wood fermenters which preserves the freshness of the fruit. Following judicious extended skin contact and in-barrel malolactic fermentation, the wine was pressed and returned to barrels for aging. A small amount of Petit Verdot and Merlot was blended with the Cabernet Sauvignon to further enhance the wine’s aroma and flavor profile.
Jeffrey Stambor joined the Beaulieu Vineyard winemaking team in 1989 as a viticulturist/enologist. As the current director of winemaking, he leads production of the winery’s world-renowned Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon, and presided over the harvest and vinification of 2013 Rarity – the extremely limited release Cabernet Sauvignon blend. He is only the fourth director of winemaking in Beaulieu Vineyard’s history, and the third to craft Georges de Latour Private Reserve over the 77-year history of that iconic wine following Andre Tchelistcheff, the original winemaker, and his immediate predecessor, Joel Aiken.
Dry, early and shaking is how 2014 will be remembered in Napa Valley, yet it had a silver lining with small, concentrated grapes and high quality. February's rains brought the total rainfall up to low but adequate, helping to relieve three years of drought conditions. Warm temperatures promoted early budbreak in spring and accelerated grape maturation. Just as harvest began, a dramatic 6.0 earthquake shook Napa Valley awake on August 24. We finished the very compact, plentiful harvest by mid-October and celebrated the vintage's beautifully ripened grapes.
We hand-selected grapes from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines from the western bench of the Rutherford AVA in our iconic BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2, originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s. We focused on clonal selections (6, 4, 169, 5197 and 7), which yield small berries with the high skin-to-juice ratio needed to make intense, long-lived wines. The fruit was hand-picked and optically sorted at the winery to ensure the highest quality selection. These chosen vines are deeply rooted in the well-draining alluvial fan soils of Rutherford, considered one of the finest regions of Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon.
