Tasting Notes

Distinctly complex in all aspects, the nose of this 2021 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon nods toward concentrated scents of inky blue and black fruit, seasoned with a pinch of thyme. Its savoriness is sustained on the palate, with an intense entry and focused structure. Decadent notes of dark chocolate emerge from barrel-aging, adding depth and richness to the blend. Streamlined acidity further delineates this wine’s character, contouring its darkness and density. Consider cellaring as this wine is capable of aging for at least 16 years.

Winemaking

To develop this wine’s complex fruit expression, we first cold-soaked the destemmed grapes for gentle extraction of flavor and color. During fermentation, regular pump- overs incorporated the flavor-rich extract from the skins into the wine. Malolactic fermentation, which naturally changes the malic acid into softer lactic acid, rounded out the mouthfeel. The wine barrel-aged for 20 months exclusively in French oak.

Vintage

The 2021 season was joyous and welcome after the challenges of prior vintages. Harvest yielded exceptionally fine fruit, some of the best in recent years. Early winter rains led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the growing season, providing ideal weather for grapes to flower, bloom, and set in early spring. Budbreak occurred early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer saw early and even ripening throughout the valley, with verasion beginning in early July. Due in part to drought conditions, harvest yields were low, and grapes were intensely flavored and smaller in berry size. One of the earliest starts, harvest began with white wine grapes in late July and proceeded with red wine grapes about a month later, at the end of August. From these optimally ripe and flavorful grapes our winemakers crafted lush, fruity wines with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, balance, and structure. 2021 was a tremendous year to taste the nuances and terroir distinctions from around the valley.

Vineyard

The fruit for this wine is sourced from our estate vineyard in the famed Oakville appellation. The Oakville District AVA, one of the first wine-growing regions within Napa Valley recognized as an official AVA, is just a small, two-mile wide stretch of pristine vineyard sites. With well-draining, complex volcanic soils and a beautifully temperate climate, the appellation has earned a deserved reputation for producing some of the finest expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Napa Valley.
