Tasting Notes

The 2020 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is inky in color and dominated by dark blackberry and cassis on the nose. The aromatic profile is complemented by hints of violet, subtle star anise, fresh black olive and a touch of minerality. Notes of dark chocolate emerge from barrel aging, adding depth and richness to the blend. On the palate, the wine exhibits a dark and dense character, while the streamlined acidity adds freshness, enhancing the overall balance. Consider cellaring as this wine is capable of aging at least 15 years.

Winemaking

To develop this wine’s complex fruit expression, we first cold-soaked the destemmed grapes for gentle flavor and color extraction. During fermentation, regular pumpovers incorporated the flavor-rich extract from the skins into the wine. Malolactic fermentation, which naturally changes the malic acid into softer lactic acid, rounded out the mouthfeel. The wine barrel-aged for 20 months exclusively in French oak.

Vintage

It was a warm, dry winter and the rain and cooler weather didn’t arrive until the end of March. While the mild spring provided a great early start, summer brought very cool mornings and very warm days. The harvest was smaller, and one of the most challenging in history, but our always optimistic team was able to create wines of high quality, with concentrated flavors and excellent acidity, from this unprecedented vintage.

Vineyard

The fruit for this wine is sourced from our estate vineyard in the famed Oakville appellation. The Oakville District AVA, one of the first wine growing regions within the Napa Valley recognized as an official AVA, is just a small, two-mile-wide stretch of pristine vineyard sites. With well-draining, complex volcanic soils and a beautiful temperate climate, the appellation has gained a healthy reputation for producing some of the finest expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Napa Valley.
