The 2019 Ranch No. 2 Cabernet Sauvignon is truly exemplary of what Rutherford Dust can present, offering beautiful notes of cassis, blackberry, and forest floor on the nose with subtle hints of allspice and wild sage. The wine unfolds with plentiful layers of coco powder, berry compote, and espresso. The tannins are structured yet elegant, providing great weight and roundness with a line of bright acidity making this an age-worthy wine.

After night harvesting, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery where they were destemmed and cold soaked for five days to gently ease color and flavor. During the roughly twelve-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 20 months in 90% new French oak barrels giving the final wine refined tannins and beautiful toasted barrel notes.
Beaulieu Vineyard Winemaker Trevor Durling, presides as only the fifth winemaker in the winery’s 119-year history. A native Californian, Trevor was raised in Sonoma County, the heart of Northern California’s wine country. With a love of agriculture, science and cuisine, Trevor pursued his studies at the University of California Davis in the Viticulture and Enology program. As winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard, Trevor incorporates his passion for creating fine wines, while preserving the heritage and legacy of Beaulieu Vineyard.
The 2019 harvest started one to two weeks later than previous years, mostly due to February rains, but because the vines were in their winter dormancy, it did not affect the 2019 crop. Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Most grapes ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended, cool growing season, and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, fresh acidity, and superb balance of the 2019 fruit. The resulting crop showed a modest yield with a slightly more compact structure and extract than in previous years.
The fruit for this wine comes from Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch 2 which lies just south of Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch 1 on the westside of Hwy 29 in the heart of Rutherford. The 85-acre vineyard is planted to mostly Cabernet Sauvignon although a small amount of high quality Sauvignon Blanc is also grown here. Like BV Ranch 1, this vineyard site enjoys optimal sun exposure and experiences the cooling influences from regular morning fog allowing for a long, even growing season. BV Ranch 2 is known for producing full bodied, concentrated wines with that signature “Rutherford Dust” flavor profile.
