Tasting Notes

The 2019 Maestro Collection Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah is an intriguing and unique blend not often seen in the Napa Valley. The aromatic nose is layered with notes of blueberry, violet, ground espresso, and allspice, a distinctive characteristic of the Syrah. The palate follows through nicely with excellent richness and flavors of cassis, black plum, and dark chocolate. The tannins are smooth and plentiful, promoting a well-structured mid-palate, followed by a long, juicy finish. This wine shows excellent balance allowing for enjoyment upon release yet is guaranteed to age gracefully for many years to come.

Winemaking

After harvesting at night, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery where they were destemmed and cold soaked for five days to gently ease color and flavor. During the roughly twelve-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 18 months in 70% new French oak before being blended, giving the final wine tremendous complexity and grace.

Vintage

The beginning of the 2019 growing season was defined by copious rainfall and late soil moisture. Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Most grapes ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended, cool growing season, and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, fresh acidity, and superb balance of the 2019 fruit. The resulting crop showed a modest yield with a slightly more compact structure and extract than in previous years.

Vineyard

The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine are sourced from the cooler, southeastern region of the Napa Valley. This climate promotes focused acidity and a complex fruit-forward expression while maintaining an approachable tannin structure. The Syrah portion of the blend is grown at BV Ranch No. 9 in the Los Carneros AVA, along the valley’s southernmost tip. Chosen for the blend due to its vibrant expression of blueberry, violet and spice, the Syrah adds an overall lushness and fullness to the palate.
