The 2018 Maestro Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah is dark and sultry with layered aromas of blackberry, black plum, ground espresso and black pepper spice notes, a distinctive characteristic of the Syrah. The palate is vibrant and rich with flavors of juicy macerated blackberries, anise, berry compote, Black cherry, and mocha. The tannins are smooth and plentiful, while the mouthfeel is plush, leading to a lengthy finish. A core of bright acidity provides excellent balance, adding to its overall drinkability now or cellaring for several years. This intriguing and unique wine is a blend not often seen in the Napa Valley but is sure to be a pleasing discovery for all.

After hand harvesting, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery. The grapes were destemmed and cold soaked 5 days to gently ease color and flavor. During the roughly 12-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 18 months in 70% new French oak before being blended, giving the final wine tremendous complexity and grace.

The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even, and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 wines are of very high quality with plenty of concentrated flavors, color, and excellent acidity.
The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine are sourced from our longtime growing partners, Deconinck Vineyards in the south eastern portion of the Napa Valley. The cooler climate growing region produces a Cabernet with focused acidity and complex fruit forward expression while maintaining an approachable tannin structure. The Syrah portion of the blend is grown at BV Ranch No. 9 in the Los Carneros region, along the valley’s southernmost tip. Chosen for the blend due to its vibrant blueberry flavor and spice notes, the Syrah adds an overall lushness and fullness to the palate as well.
